Too common to be loved?
One of the first birds to be domesticated by humans, pigeons have been bred and used for a variety of purposes throughout history, from food and religious symbolism to communications and entertainment.
As technology advanced in the 20th century, pigeons lost their functional role in human society. As cities grew, feral pigeons became a common sight in cities around the world, adapting to the human-created environment.
Subsequently, pigeons started to be seen as pests, a nuisance, and invasive.
This series explores the beauty of the species. A bird which once lived in rocky cliff environments, but now lives in our cities, on ledges, benches and telephone wires. Once domesticated, and now feral. Uniquely suited to living close to humans, indifferent to whether they are drinking water from a puddle or a fountain, or wether they are perched up on a cathedral’s arches or a vent pipe.
